Technology and the Green Life

There have been many applications in progress to assist with the green movement. Many individuals have made the commitment to preserving our earth for future generations. The idea of sustainable living is gaining ground all over the world. Recycling, cleaner fuel, and natural electricity methods are a big part of making the change. It may seem like technology does not have much to do with getting back to nature, however, huge technical innovations are making a big difference for those trying to go green.

Waste Management

Large quantities of waste tends to be deposited in landfills. Greenbelt Resources uses technology to recycle on a level that assists communities. They started by using corn waste from farmers and preparing it to be used as ethanol for vehicle fuel. Their focus is food waste and sustainability. They do this using their unique methods called ECOsystem technology. This is based on the idea that food waste is an ever present problem, even when composting and other methods are employed. Some food is simply unable to be consumed.

Their ECOsystem technology consists of small-scale modular structures that convert food waste into a variety of usable items. The unique aspect of this technology is that it is tailored to communities and their particular waste products. The systems are made to take waste from a local area and change it into something that can be used by that same community. Biofuels are the main product of this endeavor. Other products that are available from these customized systems are fertilizer, animal feed, and filtered water. There is hope that protein for human consumption may be in the near future.

Information technology is another important capability that is now being applied to green living. Recorded and analyzed data is irreplaceable when it comes to figuring out environmental solutions. Green tech organizations that focus on this aspect of sustainability are hard to find. Farmers, especially, need accurate data to plan their planting and harvests. Weather patterns are an important part of farming. Annual weather patterns and climate change needs to be properly recorded over a series of years and analyzed properly. The results can help farmers plan ahead for each season. This helps to avoid losing crops to late freezes, major storms, and early onset of cold weather.

Data is also recorded that involves the best seed varieties and soil quality in specified areas. When farmers want to know how profitable their crops may be, or which ones to plant, they can look at information about market trends and price transparency. All of this technologically recorded data makes a huge difference in the efficiency and revenue of farmers.

Carbon Dioxide

When it comes to working with the environment it is often a good idea to take some clues from nature, itself. Carbon dioxide is helpful for use in greenhouses to grow more crops in a particular time period. Too much carbon in the atmosphere, however, is not beneficial. Artificial photosynthesis has been provided by technological advances in the science lab. This process solves two problems, pollution and energy production. Earlier methods were aimed at pulling oxygen. The newer methods are able to be adjusted so that they produce hydrogen and methanol from water and carbon dioxide. The difference is that the sun is now used as a catalyst to produce a reaction.

Scientists at Harvard University are working on artificial leaves to complete the desired process when placed out in the sun. These technological advances could easily help improve air quality and harvest necessary chemicals and gasses. Technology steps in when there is a solution that needs to be more readily available. Sometime technical experts can simplify the issue, or make inventions more economically feasible.

A tech company called EnOcean has come up with a method to gain electricity that is the closest to perpetual motion anyone has been able to venture, so far. This firm works on the making and marketing of energy harvesting equipment. Other business ventures of EnOcean involve the making of radio communication devices and sensors.  These help to reduce energy use. Their work on electricity production entails the use of temperature differentials. This works by using two objects are used to generate electricity. This action is called the Seebeck Effect, as it was first discovered by a physicist named Thomas Seebeck. At present this has only been accomplished by using extreme temperature differences with objects placed close together. The new developments of this company involve a variety that can be carried out at room temperature.

Technology is involved in almost everything in today’s society. Going green is often seen as a venture into a more natural lifestyle. This venture, however, is taking a different route than it did in the past. Technology is being used to bring our environment back to a healthier state. With scientists and technical specialists working together, these efforts may be more efficient than before. Our environment can begin to heal after the long-term abuse inflicted on it pollutants.
